Being part of a minority that is still hated by millions today always keeps fresh in my mind that there are many among us who would gladly do evil things to their fellow humans. There are those who would gladly assemble and run the concentration camps. There are those who would gladly torture their fellow person. Then are those who would tell themselves that it's not what they want to do, that it's a distasteful business, but the suffering of some (even at their own hands) is for the greater good. Each society has these people among us. The US is not immune from this at all. In fact, many Americans make it quite clear they are even hoping for the opportunity to harm many of those around them. There is nothing so special about the United States that prevents the existence of people who would do evil in the name of doing the right thing. I'm pretty sure I've known in my personal life those who would run the ovens with pleasure. And yet others who would run them with self declared distaste while still claiming it is for the greater good/a better future. Perhaps for others it is just what their beliefs dictate needs to be done to clear the world of "evil".
And perhaps worse yet are those who would not participate directly in the evil acts but who would be silent while death, pain, and suffering are allowed to happen. A small number of hateful people can never dominate a society to put into place crimes against humanity without the silence of the majority. The silence of the majority is what gives the hateful minority their power.
It is always at least on the edge of my awareness that within a very short time society can take a turn for the worse, and I and many I love could be at the hands of these people who walk among us who would torture and execute people like me and those who support us. Or members of any other minority who become the victims of the passions of the masses being worked up by a "leadership" willing to harm millions for their own path to wealth and power.
The only thing that prevents this is the voice of a majority speaking out against it. The voice of the majority demanding equal rights and justice is the only thing that keeps the peace of the nation and the world. The lives of millions of vulnerable people depend upon the voices of the majority, many of them not themselves at any risk, speaking up on behalf of everyone else.
What I ask of you is to speak up. Please don't let that be too much to ask.
