The United States: Now Just Another Country That Blocks Social Media

globalrralliance

What types of countries block social media outlets?

China. Iran. North Korea. Russia. Vietnam. Turkmenistan.

And now, the United States of America.

Just like any of these other countries would do, the US government has declared that a social media app is a threat to national security. National security is certainly not a new excuse to control information. Yet, we, the public now being blocked by the US government from selected sources of information, are not told anything about what those national security concerns are.

That a foreign government can gain access to our personal data is a joke. Our US social media companies (and any company that has access to your data) are more than happy to sell the extensive data that they collect about you to any buyer. We and our data are the products sold by social media to anyone willing to buy. Any foreign government with the cash can buy all of your data without even having to create/run their own platform. Not wanting to be so obvious that it is a foreign government? Just create a shell company as that is so very easy to do. Buy the data through the shell company. Done.

That a foreign government can influence what Americans see? Again, US social media companies will sell access to you and the priority of how things appear in your social media. They will happily take the money to do so. That what those working for the foreign government is providing is false and divisive? It doesn't matter! Fact checking by US social media companies is declared dead by those very same companies.

Are we going to end up in a world where Americans can only access American owned sources of information? The Europeans have their own bubble? China theirs. Russia theirs. Who does that benefit? It benefits those who thrive on Us versus Them. And those people almost never have the interests of peace, freedom, and democracy as their own interests no matter how much they may proclaim otherwise.

I am very uncomfortable with the United States just being another country that blocks its own citizens from choosing the social media of their own choosing.
